Most
of the major Greek football stadia were built nearly half a century
ago and their status was almost tragic until 2000. A project to partly
modernize all 1st Division stadia was carried out at that time by
the League (EPAE), but it was not until 2004 that the picture really
changed. The Olympics were the cause for new stadia to be built and
others totally upgraded. Similar efforts were carried out by many
individual clubs. As a result, the condition of many stadia has improved
a lot. However, much more needs to be done, as Greek football cannot
be proud of the present condition of many smaller grounds, especially
in the lower divisions.
