Laughing

Wink

Razz

Best Regards

Razz

Mr Scott Ostler,
Your article Athens becoming a five-ring circus is full of lies and is offending Greece. Your article is a cheap burst of racism and you owe an apology to your readers.
Living in the Bay Area, you must be open-minded and respect other cultures and other countries’ history, if you want to be respected. You need to learn history, geography and travel. I suggest to go to one of the Bay Area’s Greek Festival in (May 15 Oakland) to find that falafel is not Greek delicacy.
Few things I want notice to you, related to what you wrote:
• Greece and the allies fought against Nazis and suffered the most.
“The Greeks brought about the first actual defeat of the land forces of the Axis. Even if Greece were to be crashed tomorrow, its military contribution would remain unimpaired. It will be the glory of modern Greece that it dismantled the omnipotence of the Axis and gave to all free peoples the proof of the value of democracy.
The New York Times, 28-11-1940”
• Greece is a Christian country member of the European Union and NATO, close ally to U.S. and last safe western country near to troubled Middle East.
• Greece, a country of 10 m people, is top tourist destination with great infrastructure hosting 10 m tourists every year.
• When Greece was assigned the Olympics back in 1996 terrorism was not the main issue like today.
• Greece is the birthplace of the Olympics
• Regarding sailing, Greece is surrounded by sea with long tradition in sailing and a lot Olympic medals
• Average max temperature in Greece is 83 degrees in July and August.
• The marathon starts at the original marathon village, where the battle of marathon took place (2500 years ago) and Spiridon Louis won the first Olympic Marathon later in 1896 in 2:58:50 (on a 40K course) and when you talk about traffic I think no place can beat the Bay Area (101 6 pm any weekday!)
• The priest in ancient Greece dress does the same thing every four years and symbolizes the light of the civilization born in Greece and spread to the world (Greece is birthplace of sports, theater, democracy, politics, philosophy etc)
• The official Greek currency is Euro and there were never five-drachma bills!
Scott Ostler, I could continue forever with information like:
• Money spent for the security of the 2004 Olympics,
• the number of new building constructions, and the new metro (Greek Bart)
• the low crime and almost no terrorism rate of the country,
• the successful pan European sports competition took place few years ago in Greece,
• The tremendous support Greece is going to get from USA, England, Spain, Israel etc. because Greece is the smallest Olympic host country.
Scott Ostler you failed big time to do fair and balanced reporting and you owe us an apology

Twisted Evil
