http://www.mpa.gr/article.html?doc_id=485453

Antigrafw apo ti simerini Independent.

Though the crowds that cheered our Olympians appeared unanimous in their belief that London's bid for the 2012 Games was in the bag, I beg to differ. After visiting Athens for the Olympics it is sadly apparent that London has some way to go before securing the approval of the International Olympic Committee. It might help if our capital could pass a single month without suffering some calamitous transport breakdown.
Of course, there's no reason why London should not match Athens as long as we construct a brand new airport and motorway ringroad, along with a dual carriageway and Tube line from the centre of the city to the proposed Olympic site in East London. Oh, and we should reduce the population by two thirds. Do that and London will be a shoo-in.

- REUTERS :

Olympics: Rogge says Athens set new standard

ATHENS - International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge has praised Athens Games organisers for setting new standards for 2008 hosts Beijing.

In a letter obtained by Reuters Friday Rogge, who had repeatedly warned the Greeks to speed up preparations in the run-up to last August's Games, said Athens organisers should be proud of their work.

"Our Chinese friends from (Beijing 2008 Games organising committee) BOCOG have told me repeatedly that the great success of Athens is putting them under extra responsibility to equal what you have achieved," he said in the letter to Athens Games chief Gianna Angelopoulos.

"I had an overwhelming number of congratulations on the success of the Games (which I do not deserve)," he said.

The IOC had warned Athens in 2000 it risked losing the Games if it did not pick up the pace of preparations.

But after pouring billions into constructions, organizers completed all works days before the start of the August 13-29 Games.

Greek officials said Friday the Olympics were the most expensive ever costing nearly nine billion euros ($17 billion), almost double the amount forecast a year before the opening ceremony.

Ta kala arthra gia tous Olympiakous tis Athinas synexizontai. Apo to Reuters (apospasmata):

Athens proved a watershed for IOC

http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsArticle.jhtml?type=sportsNews&storyID=639893

The critics, sceptics and doomsayers were left speechless by a spectacular Summer Olympics in 2004.

The Olympic efforts of Athens crippled Greek finances but at the same time put the ancient city on the map as a modern European capital with sports facilities to match anywhere in the world.
Its August extravaganza -- for years a cause for concern for Olympic chiefs -- proved a heartwarming success.

Despite recording more than double the previous number of doping violations at a Summer Games, the Athens Olympics proved a roaring success everywhere except on the balance sheet.

The cost of staging them had spiralled in recent years after the Greeks had wasted three years of preparations and rushed to complete dozens of projects only weeks before the start.

The total cost shot up to more than 8.0 billion euros from an initial estimate of some 3.5 billion.

For that 8.0 billion euros, Athens has a shiny new metro system and, more importantly, a well-earned reputation as a slick, can-do city.

Arrow Kai to arthro synexizei me ta problimata pou antimetwpizei to Torino gia tous xeimerinous Olympiakous:

As the curtain came down on the Athens Games, trouble was looming on the horizon for the hosts of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.

At the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) most recent meeting in Lausanne, Turin Games chief Valentino Castellani reported an "imbalance" of 185 million euros in the budget.

Added to this headache is the fact that organisers may be forced to build temporary housing in the mountains unless they can persuade owners of second homes to give them up for the Games.

COMMENTARY

By Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki is president of the Athens 2004 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games.

Greece does not wish to be drawn into an American culture war. Yet that is exactly what is happening. The Federal Communications Commission has launched an investigation into the broadcast of the opening ceremonies of the Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games.

The first step was taken in December, when the commission demanded that NBC provide it with tapes of the broadcast. This was in response to nine complaints about indecency from U.S. citizens (globally, viewers exceeded 3.9 billion).

The FCC posted the complaints on its website. One person reported hearing an obscenity; one objected to the male anatomy on a representation of Greek sculpture; another thought a woman's breast had been revealed; and yet another claimed to have seen a couple making love.

If NBC is punished for airing our opening ceremonies — which in reality depicted Greek contributions to civilization — it would, in effect, label a presentation of our culture on your airwaves as "indecent." We resent it, and I feel duty-bound to respond.

Let's remember the context. Greece waited 108 years for the modern Olympic Games to return to our country, where the Olympics were invented in 776 BC, and to Athens, where they were revived in 1896. Greece overcame enormous obstacles to host the games. We had to complete preparations that were supposed to take seven years in four years' time, and ours were the first post-9/11 Summer Games, which required us to provide unprecedented security.

After essentially running a marathon at a sprinters' pace, and facing the doubts of foreign skeptics, Greece was ready on time. We fought over-commercialization by sponsors and cheating by athletes. We had great Games in a safe environment. World records were shattered. For 17 triumphant days, the world saw the remarkable things that its athletes and we Greeks could accomplish.

Our Games' positive first impression was created by the opening ceremonies. Before 72,000 spectators in the open-air stadium, lighted by pyrotechnics, with performers and props flying through the air on wires and moving en masse across the infield, the ceremonies presented the Greek origins of democracy, philosophy, theater, sport and the Olympic Games. In this context, we represented the Greek sculpture people see in museums, realistic human beings as God made them. We also showed a couple enjoying their love of the Greek sea and each other. And we told the history of Eros, the god of love. Turning love, yearning and desire into a deity is an important part of our contribution to civilization.

Far from being indecent, the opening ceremonies were beautiful, enlightening, uplifting and enjoyable. There was no cause for shame or complaint.

As Americans surely are aware, there is great hostility in the world today to cultural domination in which a single value system created elsewhere diminishes and degrades local cultures. There is also a vast and violent global culture war raging between the forces of modernism and fundamentalism, a battle whose outcome cannot be known. In this context, it is astonishingly unwise for an agency of the U.S. government to engage in an investigation that could label a presentation of the Greek origins of civilization as unfit for television viewing.

It is my hope that Americans will consider this advice: Don't punish NBC or Greece for accurately portraying Greek culture in your living rooms.

In the past, the U.S. has been open to the world, incorporating the best it has to offer into its culture. Turning away from this tradition would bring about a close-minded, fortress mentality that would endanger the U.S. and its relations with other countries.

Accept us as we are. It's the decent thing to do.

Ta sxetika sxolia:

As an aspiring Olympic hopeful a few years back, I would have been really disappointed to have had my probably only chance at it take place in wet, miserable, overcrowded old London. Now Athens has the facilities and has always been the spiritual home, the games should surely return there every four years, rather than impose this huge financial burden on a different country each year. I have never understood; if you have the facilities, why build them all over again?
Nigel, Redhill, UK

As a Brit living in the US, of course I'd like to see it happen in London, but let's get away from the financial side of running the Olympics and how everyone wants to host it so they can make some money - let's return to basics and keep in Athens...after all it was their idea!
Tony Ambler, Austin, TX, USA

Athens and stop wasting money
Mike, London, UK

Since Athens now have modern facilities they should be hosting the games forever, at the end of the day it was the Greeks who invented the games. However since unfortunately this is not going to be the case Moscow should host the games. The Russians have the money, space and can prove they can organize events like this, anyone remember the 1980 games?

Shocked Shocked
Evil or Very Mad

Evil or Very Mad
